Canonical the company behind Ubuntu Linux, Ubuntu plans to expand into the realm of smartphones, tablets and smart TV, with immediate plans to make Ubuntu 12:04 and is targeted to be released to the entire computing platform in 2014.
Mark Shuttleworth, founder of Canonical, in an interview said, "This is a natural extension of the idea of Ubuntu Linux as the 'Human Beings'. People have moved from destkop into a new form of computing, it is important for us to reach people out of this platform. So, we will embrace the challenge of how to use Ubuntu on a smartphone, tablet and smart tv, "the official announcement will be presented by Shuttleworth in Ubuntu Developer Summit in Orlando, Florida.
After a discussion with a partner for 18 months, plans to bring Ubuntu in smartphones and tablet space is not just wishful thinking alone. Since the launch of Unity as default invorenment destkop Ubuntu, Shuttleworth stated all parts of Unity has a vision of a robust design for multiple platforms, "We also have heard the desire of people who send tablet that they want Ubuntu on tablet" so that "Ubuntu already has a developer and customer base "he added.
The question arises how Ubuntu can gain market share that has been dominated by Android and Apple's IOS?. Shuttleworth said that he saw "Android as a major competitor, but from the perspective of the industry, Google's decision to acquire Motorola Mobility has destabilize the hardware vendors, so some of them looking for an alternative non-Android".
Smart TV is the most extensive gap for Ubuntu, because of concern for internal software smart TV is still lacking. Most people pay more attention to the exterior of brands like Sony, Samsung or LG, and not what was inside.
Canonical's founder said he would push the deadline and innovate, so as to provide a plan and a good product will be.
